Free tax filing resources:
(In-person) For those in Western MA looking for free tax preparation, check out Community Action Pioneer Valley’s VITA tax clinic. In addition to some caveats around income sources, participants must also:
Live in Hampshire county, Franklin county, or the North Quabbin towns of Athol, Petersham, Royalston, and Phillipston.
Have income at or below 250% of the Federal Poverty Level:
One person, $36,450
Two people, $49,300
Three people, $62,150
Four people, $75,000
Five or more, $96,635
Learn more about the IRS’ VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) programs, and find one anywhere in the country.
(Online) For tax filers who earned less than $84,000 last year and are looking to file on their own with free tax software, or for filers who earned less than $67,000 and are looking for someone online to help them prepare their taxes, visit getyourrefund.org.
(Online) You can also browse different IRS Free File offers from various tax filing websites here.
(Online) Despite Intuit’s best efforts, the IRS has a relatively new free tax filing tool for those with simple tax needs. You can see if you qualify at directfile.irs.gov, and you can read more about it in this Vox article.
